This is about my mom, who passed away some years ago now. When she was in the nursing home, it was so hard to see her there, really a shadow of her former self. I just had to write this to sing to her, and sing it to her I did, at her bedside. Great lady. Her name was Hope. :-)

The best thing I can do for you now
Is to tell you
That I love you
The only thing that’s left to do
Is to let you know
I care
And I remember when you were young
And beautiful and strong
I hope in your dreams
You’re still there.

Crisp winter mornings
Big sister off to school
Time for you and me.
Snuggled in your lap
The radiator’s clank and hiss
Mingle with memory
Of your kiss

Where is the woman
Who learned to water-ski at 43?
Where’s the one who bathed my brow
When fever’s running high
Who cooked our meals
And sewed our clothes
And never could bear
To see me cry?

The best thing I can do for you now…

I’ve asked them to keep you comfortable
I wish I knew you were
Sometimes I think you’ll outlive us all.
It can’t be very pleasant
Lying there that way
I wonder how much
You still recall.

But I remember when you were young
And beautiful and strong
I hope that in your dreams
You’re still there.
